Can the Broncos sign Philip Rivers? Fans call for veteran QB reunion after Bo Nix’s injury

Despite the Denver Broncos' win against the Buffalo Bills, their postseason path took a devastating turn when quarterback Bo Nix broke his ankle. The win put Denver to the AFC Championship Game, but the news of the injury immediately changed the mood. Fans are seeking answers now that Nix is out for the duration of the postseason.

Almost immediately after the injury was confirmed, social media lit up with calls for the Broncos to reunite with the veteran quarterback. Rivers, who briefly came out of retirement to play for the Indianapolis Colts earlier this season. He has become a popular suggestion among fans worried about Denver’s chances in their biggest game in years.

Why Philip Rivers cannot sign with Denver

Rivers was on an active roster with the Indianapolis Colts when the regular season ended. Because of that, he will not officially become a free agent until the new league year begins in March.

During the playoffs, teams are only allowed to sign players who were already free agents or on practice squads at the end of the regular season. Players under active contracts, even veterans who are no longer playing, are not eligible. This rule removes Rivers from the list of emergency options, no matter how appealing the idea may be.


In other words, the Broncos’ hands are tied.

What Denver’s quarterback plan looks like now

With Nix out, head coach Sean Payton has confirmed that Jarrett Stidham will step in as the starting quarterback for the AFC Championship Game. Sam Ehlinger has been elevated to the backup role.

Stidham has NFL experience, but starting a conference title game with limited recent action is a huge challenge. As a result, Denver is expected to lean heavily on its defense, running game, and conservative play-calling. Ball control and avoiding mistakes will be key if the Broncos hope to stay competitive.



The idea of Rivers returning has been entertaining for fans, especially given the stakes and the timing of Nix’s injury. But while social media jokes and wishful thinking continue, the reality is clear: the Broncos must move forward with the quarterbacks already in the building.
