BENGALURU: Champions in the inaugural edition and two-time finalists England were pre-match favourites against Bangladesh, who are making only their second appearance in the Women's World T20 since their debut at home in 2014. And the unpredictability of the format notwithstanding, the result was a predictable one for England.
Charlotte Edwards and her team won by 36 runs, but not before the Jahanara Alam-led Bangladesh side put up a fight.
Chasing England's 153, Bangladesh made 117 runs in reply. The numbers, though, belie Bangladesh's performance. It was markedly improved from the one they had turned in against India in the tournament opener. Bangladesh bowled with precision too, with pacer Jahanara being the most successful with a haul of 3-32.
Brief scores: England 1537 in 20 overs (Charlotte Edwards 60,
Natalie Sciver 27; Jahanara Alaam 3-32) bt Bangladesh 117-6 in 20 overs (Nigar Sultana 35, Salma Khatun 32; Anya Shrubsole 2-27).
