Viv Richards' unbeaten 138 (157 balls; 11x4, 3x6) in the title clash was a lesson in pacing an innings.
When Collis King (86 runs, 66b, 10x4s, 3x6s) was going great guns, Richards played the second fiddle in the fifth-wicket partnership of 139. After King's departure, West Indies added 48 runs with only five coming from Derrick Murray.
Roberts, Garner and Holding were out for ducks and Craft was unbeaten on zero as Viv took over the scoring responsibility.
Richards' driving, cutting and pulling was top drawer. And he reserved the best for the last, dispatching Mike Hendrick's two balls in the 60th over into the mid-wicket stand with savagery; even using the vertical bat.
Mike Brearley's art of captaincy ended with a humiliating 92-run defeat as WI made 286 batting first.
