CHENNAI: India's current crop of leg-spinners may not have set the stage ablaze thus far, but Narendra Hirwani feels there are a few who could still do the job at the Test level. "R Ashwin is definitely our No 1 spinner. Apart from that, Piyush Chawla and Amit Mishra have been doing well," Hirwani, former India leggie and a selector between 2008-11, said.
When quizzed on the dearth of quality leg spinners in India, Hirwani revealed a few fundamental flaws.
1x1 polls
"Firstly , spinners these days worry about trapping the batsman leg-before more with the straighter one than actually spinning the ball. They must exercise more patience, and not try too many variations," Hirwani cautioned. "Spinners can be more effective if they spend extra time bowling on one stump. They can analyse their action, the release etc while doing so," Hirwani said.
He felt Karn Sharma was fast-tracked into the Indian Test team.
"Karn is a good bowler in the shorter formats. But I felt it was a little early for him to be picked in the Test side," Hirwani said.
