'Doosra's out, is Murali?

Now that the Sri Lankan Board and ICC have got together to ban Muralitharan''s most potent weapon, the beguiling ''doosra'', will he remain the cricketing force that he has been? Or will his star fade having been denied a weapon that he had perfected.
The matter came to the notice of the world after Match Referee Chris Broad reported him to the ICC in the Sri Lanka-Australia series in 2004 for only this particular delivery.

It brought him back full circle to the controversy that was first raised by umpires Darrell Hair and Ross Emerson way back in 1995 when they no-balled him repeatedly due to his ''faulty action'' while releasing the ball.
He escaped a ban then and even now it was shown that too much was read into the matter by the umpire. In spite of the fact that the recent investigations on his bowling action carried out by Aussie coach Darryl Foster indicated that the advantage gained by Murali from this unique ball was negligible and that he be allowed to bowl it as and when he pleases, yet the cricketing authorities have seen it fit to put it on the scrapheap of history.
There is no denying that his most effective delivery today is the aptly named ''doosra'' which turns away from the right-handed batsmen unlike his stock deliveries which come into them. This ball of his has great shock and awe force and when he first unleashed it onto an unsuspecting world, he notched up many kills. This is a delivery that he bowls with great accuracy using a method that is both flabbergasting as well as one which would defy a normal human being.

But Murali is not normal as he has been blessed with a bent arm that can contort itself into fantastic forms since it can''t straighten itself out - bowlers must keep a straight arm while bowling. This allows him to deliver the ball with a whip-lash effect from the hand that is facing backward. The forward motion that he attaches to the ball stems from it being hurled backwards with the fingers imparting the final push that sends the ball on its way towards the batsmen. The only equivalent analogy in sporting history is the case of rugby where you must pass the ball back in order to move it forward.
Although technical changes effected by the cricketing authorities in Murali''s action have straightened the elbow a lot, yet there is still more than 5 degrees of error in straightening of the elbow on his delivery - still outside the law while bowling the ''doosra''.
So, will Murali be shackled effectively by batsmen now that this amazing delivery is banned?
It must be said that Murali has built up his reputation on the back of his other stock deliveries, having unveiled his banned delivery, some two seasons ago, which have allowed him to mine the motherload and get almost 500 wickets with them.
While only his ''doosra'' delivery has been called, he is free to bowl all the other missiles in his armour including the flippers, top-spinners and his trade-mark hugely turning off-breaks through which he has harvested hundreds of wickets in a career that has been more successful than most.
No one can doubt his zeal for the game, he loves to bowl and it is his passion to flummox batsmen to their doom. He has shown throughout his career that he will struggle on manfully, entertaining everybody with his sublime form, in spite of the grossly unfair criticism that has been leveled at him for years. His determination and doggedness to prove himself as the best bowler that cricket has ever seen will surely yield innumerable more wickets for him.
So, even though he has been deprived off the use of his entire armoury, - a new surprise ball is always a prerequisite for a great bowler - Muralitharan is too good a bowler to let himself be weighed down by a ban. He can go on his merry way and showcase his genius to the world and keep providing entertainment to his legion of fans and the general public.
