NEW DELHI: San Antonio Spurs' rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama continues to astound the basketball world, rewriting history with a stellar performance on Monday night. The 7-foot-2 forward, selected as the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, achieved a rare triple-double, displaying his prowess on both ends of the court.
In a commanding 122-99 victory over the Toronto Raptors at the Scotiabank Arena, Wembanyama delivered an extraordinary stat line, amassing 27 points, 14 rebounds, and an impressive 10 blocks. While triple-doubles are commonly associated with points, rebounds, and assists, Wembanyama's defensive dominance set him apart as only the 26th player in NBA history to achieve this feat with double-digit blocks.

Wembanyama made a notable entrance before the game, donning a ski mask and goggles that completely concealed his face. The mysterious pregame outfit quickly gained attention, with fans speculating about the rookie's unique style.
On the court, the 20-year-old French phenom's performance made a lasting impact. His 10 blocks marked the highest tally since Clint Capela's 13-block game in January 2021. Moreover, Wembanyama joined the elite company of Spurs legend David Robinson, becoming the first rookie since Robinson in the 1989/90 season to record a triple-double with blocked shots.
Expressing his appreciation for being mentioned alongside Robinson, Wembanyama stated, “It’s great company to have my name next to him. It counts even more because it’s family, it’s from the Spurs.”

This remarkable triple-double is Wembanyama's second in the NBA, with his first occurring in January when he notched 16 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists. Against the Raptors, he also contributed five assists, placing him in an exclusive club alongside Robinson and Hall-of-Famer Hakeem Olajuwon as the only players in the last 40 years to achieve at least 25 points, 10 rebounds, 10 blocks, and five assists in a single game, according to StatMuse.
Leading the league in blocks per game at 3.2, Wembanyama acknowledged the evolving challenge of shot-blocking. “It’s getting harder to block shots - I had to make an extra effort because less and less people go at me,” he noted. The young forward emphasized the impact of his intimidating interior defense on opposing offenses.
Wembanyama's historic performance fueled a much-needed road win for the San Antonio Spurs, with Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan contributing 27 and 16 points, respectively. Despite the victory, the Spurs, currently in a rebuilding phase centered around Wembanyama's development, remain at the bottom of the Western Conference with an 11-43 record.
