The Dallas Mavericks are looking to add some paint presence to their roster, and the Utah Jazz might have just the man for them. John Collins, standing tall at 6 feet 9 inches, seems to be the perfect candidate for the Mavericks, who wish to improve their already deadly offense. This season, Collins is averaging 17.8 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game.
Gordi Chiesa, who was the Utah Jazz’s assistant coach for more than a decade, also had some thoughts about the situation. Here’s what he had to say about Collins during his conversation on the Sean O’Connel Show:
“He’s playing very well. The answer is they should move on him then. Because they’re trying to get dramatically younger and improve their overall franchise via draft. So that’s the master plan, that’s what they’re going to try, they’re trying to right now.”
Would it be wise for the Jazz to trade John Collins?
Collins’ career averages stand at 15.8 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. At a single glance, it is clear to see that the 27-year-old would prove to be a menacing presence in the paint. However, with just two years left on his contract, it wouldn’t make sense for the Jazz to keep him around.
If Utah can get a few draft picks or a decent facilitator in turn for Collins, they shouldn’t even hesitate to pull the trigger. Their rebounding and defensive needs are all taken care of by Walker Kessler, so the Jazz won’t even miss Collins. Moreover, the team already seems to be hanging their hopes on the potential of Lauri Markannen.

Another team that could make a move for Collins is the Portland Trailblazers, who according to Chiesa are a dumping ground for unwanted salaries. It’ll be interesting to see where John Collins ends up after the All-Star break next year.
