The Dallas Mavericks’ season just hit a major speed bump. After spending the first half of the season proving he was more than just a pre-draft hype train, rookie phenom Cooper Flagg has been sidelined with a left ankle sprain. The injury occurred during a January 14 showdown against the Denver Nuggets when Flagg rolled the ankle while defending Peyton Watson in the first half. While he briefly attempted a gutsy return before halftime, Mavs training staff made the cautious, and likely smart, call to shut him down. Now, Dallas fans are left holding their breath as the Rookie of the Year frontrunner watches from the bench.

Flagg’s historic rookie campaign on pause

Before the injury, Flagg wasn't just playing well for a rookie, he was playing like an All-NBA lock. The 19-year-old Duke product currently leads the Mavericks in scoring, averaging a staggering 18.8 points per game, a drop after missing two consecutive games. He hasn't just been a bucket-getter, Flagg is the only rookie in the league ranking in the top three across all five major statistical categories: points, rebounds (6.3), assists (4.2), steals (1.3), and blocks (0.8).
His impact was most apparent just two nights before the injury, when he torched Brooklyn Nets for 27 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals with 10 shots from the field despite tweaking that same ankle.
Flaggs prowess on both ends of the floor has turned the Mavericks into must-watch television, and without him, they lose their primary defensive anchor and their most versatile offensive weapon. His absence from the bench leaves a massive void in a rotation that is already missing their veteran star Anthony Davis.

Copper Flagg's road to recovery and Roty race

The big question now: how long will the Flagg be sidelined? As of today, January 19, Flagg is considered a game-time decision for tonight’s matchup against the New York Knicks at MSG. While he has already missed two consecutive games, his status has been upgraded from doubtful to questionable, is a clear sign that the swelling is down and that the 2025 #1 pick is itching to get back on the hardwood. The Mavericks’ front office is walking a tightrope. They desperately need Flagg’s production to keep pace in a crowded Western Conference, but they can’t afford to risk the long-term health of the new face of the franchise. With fellow rookie Kon Knueppel currently neck-and-neck with him in the scoring race, every missed game matters for the award season. But for Dallas, the focus remains simple: get Cooper back at 100% so he can continue his march toward greatness.
