LeBron James honors MLK on social media while unveiling meaningful Nike LeBron 23 ‘Honor the King’ sneaker

LeBron James, a forward for the Los Angeles Lakers, is having an incredible 23rd NBA season. In the meantime, historic colorways of the Nike LeBron 23 are part of James' iconic footwear line's year-long victory lap. He unveiled his brand-new Nike sneaker, which honors Dr Martin Luther King.

The "Honour The King" sneaker, which was unveiled as a part of the Nike LeBron 23 collection, pays tribute to both King and the hotel in Memphis where he was killed. Following Dr. King's passing, the Lorraine Motel came to represent the Civil Rights movement's ongoing optimism and tenacity.

Nike LeBron 23 design draws inspiration from MLK’s legacy and Memphis history

James unveiled the Nike LeBron 23 "Honor the King" colorway earlier this week. Although James goes by the moniker "King," this is actually an homage to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. According to Kicks, the sneaker's vivid teal hue, which resembles the colors of the renowned motel, identifies another "King."

The sneaker's tongue has gold details and a golden Nike check, but its primary colour is the famous teal. The Lorraine Motel, where the Civil Rights hero was assassinated, served as the inspiration for the teal colorway. Additionally, it pays homage to the 2008 game in which James scored 51 points against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Alongside its heel, the shoe bears a "EQUALITY" feature that reminds buyers of the shared value of both "Kings." The King himself posted a picture to his Instagram account to reveal this collaboration.

The post contained a bunch of photos of James wearing a black sweatshirt displaying the words “HONOR KING..”

Numerous colourways of the Nike LeBron 23 will be available, with 23 designs showcasing significant moments in James' career. The four-time NBA champion has started showcasing several styles ahead of their release dates, with eight of the colourways already available.

The "Green With Envy" colourway was also included in James' preview of future colourways. The Miami Heat vs. Boston Celtics game from the 2012 Eastern Conference Finals is evoked by the purple and green pattern.

Release details and deeper meaning behind the Nike LeBron 23 ‘Honor the King’ sneaker

The sneakers will retail for $210 in adult sizes on Nike's website and at a few stores, but the company has not yet said when they will be available. James, on the other hand, has long supported the national monument and cultural institution.

With the coveted sneaker, the NBA champion now pays additional tribute to the motel's significance to Black and American history. But James also added a personal remark to the shoe, referencing his famous 51-point performance against the Memphis Grizzlies in 2008.

Each design in the Nike LeBron 23 collection, which honours James' 23 NBA seasons, will commemorate a legendary aspect of James' incredible career in professional basketball and beyond.

Sneakerheads and James lovers will have to wait a little while longer to purchase the iconic shoe, according to Sneaker Bar Detroit. According to the outlet, the "Honour The King" shoe will be released on February 24, which is the end of Black History Month.
