LeBron James has been a talk of the town recently. While the Los Angeles Lakers legend often grabs headlines for his astonishing playmaking at the age of 41, he has been dropping retirement hints. It is highly likely that the Lakers veteran would hang up his basketball sneakers ending his legendary career in the NBA. After gifting his mom, Gloria Marie James, a jersey with a personal message thanking her, James has shared that he may not play in the Madison Square Garden. It was a clear hint of the fact that he is counting his days in the league. Despite the age factor, James has been quite productive as he is still playing at his elite level. However, this season could be his last as James previously mentioned that he is looking to spend some quality time with family.

LeBron James drops retirement hint after Lakers loss to the Knicks

The Los Angeles Lakers fell 112-100 to the New York Knicks. Madison Square Garden has always held a special place in James’ career. He has delivered signature performances there, drawn respect from rival crowds, and treated each appearance like an event. After Sunday’s game, that history framed his response when asked about his uncertain future.
“At the end of the day, everything has to come to an end at some point. So, no matter what it is, it's going to be like, ‘I'll never play again in Madison Square Garden. I'll never play again in certain arenas. I’ll never play again, period,’” LeBron said.
James scored 22 points on efficient shooting in 35 minutes in the Lakers loss to the Knicks. It also came on the same day he was selected as an NBA All Star for the 22nd straight time.

LeBron James' current contract: What you need to know?

James does not have a contract for the 2026-27 season. That reality fuels speculation as much as his comments. While he continues to log heavy minutes and average over 20 points per game, his next move remains undecided. League observers expect difficult conversations ahead, especially if the Lakers reshape their roster around younger stars. He has dismissed the idea of a farewell tour and insists no final decision has been made with his family. Financial flexibility, team direction, and health will all matter. James has acknowledged that those talks will come later, not midseason.Last year, LeBron opted in to his $52.6 million player option to continue his tenure with the Lakers for the 2025–26 season. However, after this season, he will be a free agent, and it’s unclear if he would opt to play for another team if the Lakers let him go.
