Former NBA player Bill Hanzlik announced on X on Tuesday, February 17, that former NBA coach and player Doug Moe had passed away at the age of 87. Hanzlik spent eight seasons with the Denver Nuggets, playing for Moe. He reportedly died after a tough battle with cancer.

Moe was an amazing player and an exceptional coach. From 1968 to 1970, he was named to the ABA's All-Star team three times, and in 1969, he assisted the Oakland Oaks in winning the league title. A few years later, he made the switch to coaching, serving as an assistant coach for his old friend Larry Brown. After taking over as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs in 1976, he managed the team for four seasons.

As coach of the Denver Nuggets in the 1980s, Doug Moe rose to popularity. However, unfortunately, he passed away on Tuesday. The Nuggets claimed in a statement on Tuesday that Moe was an "one of a kind leader and person who spearheaded one of the most successful and exciting decades in Nuggets history."

They further wrote:

"He will forever be loved and remembered by Nuggets fans and his banner commemorating his 432 career victories as head coach will hang in the rafters to forever honor his incredible legacy.. The organization's thoughts are with Doug's wife Jane, his son David and all of his family and loved ones who are hurting at this moment."




Moe's son, David, reportedly informed a number of the coach's colleagues that his father had passed away after a long battle with cancer. Moe was a renowned NBA personality. After taking over the team in 1980, he led the organization to one of its most crucial decades.

Moe's legendary attack, which led the league in scoring six times, helped the Nuggets to reach the postseason for 9 consecutive years. Moe is also recognized for having revolutionized the NBA's "passing game offense."

Additionally, before landing his first head coaching position with the San Antonio Spurs, where he guided the team to a 117–135 record over four seasons, Moe served as an assistant coach for four years. After that, he spent ten seasons with the team as interim head coach.

In the 1987–88 season, Moe was named NBA Coach of the Year. The Nuggets led the NBA Midwest with 116.7 points per game and ended first with a 54-28 record that season. However, they lost to the Dallas Mavericks in the semifinals of the Western Conference playoffs after defeating the Seattle SuperSonics in the opening round.

The Detroit Pistons selected Moe first in the 1960 draft, and he was a two-time All-American from UNC. He was a fantastic coach.
