Ben Simmons has finally addressed the swirling rumors about his basketball future. Simmons did it in the simplest way possible. The former Los Angeles Clippers guard, who remains unsigned in free agency, responded to speculation about a potential retirement with a blunt one-word comment on Instagram: “no.” His response shuts down weeks of chatter as the 29-year-old three-time All-Star faces an uncertain road heading into the 2025–26 NBA season.

Ben Simmons shoots down retirement talk with blunt response

Retirement whispers gained high buzz earlier this summer after the New York Post reported Ben Simmons was “considering” stepping away from the game. The timing fueled speculation, as the former top pick had just completed a disappointing stint with the Clippers after a midseason buyout from the Brooklyn Nets. Across 18 games in Los Angeles, Simmons averaged 2.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.1 assists in just over 16 minutes a night, failing to secure a meaningful postseason role. Before joining the Clippers, Simmons appeared in 33 games with Brooklyn, posting modest numbers — 6.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 6.9 assists — while continuing to battle recurring injuries that have hampered him in recent years. Despite his defensive versatility and playmaking ability, front offices grew hesitant about investing in him long term.
When a fan recently asked on social media if he had retired, Simmons dismissed the idea outright. That simple denial suggests he intends to keep his career alive.

What’s next for Ben Simmons in free agency?

The uncertainty surrounding Simmons stems not only from his recent struggles but also from his history. A No. 1 overall pick in 2016, Simmons was once the centerpiece of the Philadelphia 76ers’ rebuild, winning Rookie of the Year in 2018 and making three All-Star appearances. His career unraveled after a contentious exit from Philadelphia, followed by injuries and inconsistent play in Brooklyn and Los Angeles. Also Read: Insider reveals NY Liberty star Breanna Stewart’s injury update amid looming uncertainty for Game 2 against Phoenix MercuryStill, at just 29, Simmons insists he isn’t finished. As of now, it is unclear if another NBA team will take a chance on him is the looming question. Regardless, Simmons believes that he still has a lot to offer to the NBA. It would be interesting to see where he would land next.
