“Don’t feel like everyone was on board” — Dwyane Wade reacts to shocking Chris Paul exit as Los Angeles Clippers farewell plan fails
Recently, Lawrence Frank, president of the Los Angeles Clippers, told Chris Paul that the team was cutting ties with him. This happened in just 21 games into his retirement tour. Paul was sent home by the Clippers less than 25% of the way through the season.
It was meant to be his last tour. Many NBA players were shocked by the move. Former NBA player, Dwyane Wade, who is also Paul's friend, recently opened up about it. He claims that he knows why Clippers made the move.
Given that CP3 was a five-time assists champion and had led the league in steals six times, many thought the Los Angeles Clippers would go above and beyond to ensure a respectable farewell. However, in a shocking change of events, the Clippers waived him from the club.
Recently, in an interview with Paul during Wade's podcast, The Timeout, Wade revealed the details of the split with Clippers. He said:
“Just even listening to the conversation last night, I don’t feel like there was clear communication about this whole CP coming back to the Clippers.. When I say communication, it has to be ownership, it has to be the front office, it has to be coaches, star players.”
He reaffirmed his belief that a big factor in the unpleasant breakup between the two parties was a lack of communication, citing his conversation with Paul.
He added:
“We all communicate that this is a good idea. And we’re all on board for this. So I don’t feel like it was great communication... I don’t feel like everyone was on board for this, or else it wouldn’t have cut the way it cut. Somebody didn’t want this [expletive] to happen anyway.”
Wade continued by saying that he thought the Clippers organization's internal structure had a role. Although the identity of the person who ended Paul's stint with the team has not been confirmed, the three-time winner believed that someone had to be responsible. He continued:
“Somewhere, some line, somebody was like,‘ I don’t really, nope.‘ And they’ve got some power, and some say… So when they went to the place of ‘I’m uncomfortable with how you’re trying to hold us accountable, I want you out of here.‘ Whoever that is.”
Former Clippers' player, Paul Pierce, claims that the only reason things became so bad was because the club had been losing since the start of the 2025-2026 season. Pierce also reacted to the whole thing. Pierce thinks that the way things turned out was mostly influenced by the Clippers' consistent placement in the bottom three of the Western Conference standings.
The team sent Paul home following a recent road trip, even though he spent the summer in Los Angeles for what is anticipated to be his final season. Despite denials from team president Lawrence Frank and head coach Tyronn Lue, the split was allegedly mostly due to issues arising from his conflicts with the front office and Lue.
Shortly after this, he shared the news on social media, writing, "Just found out I'm being sent home," indicating that, like everyone else in the NBA, he was taken aback by the Clippers' decision. Following the Hawks game, CP3's old colleagues expressed their shock at the news as well.
Franchise star Kawhi Leonard said that he was taken aback, while James Harden said he was just as bewildered and astonished others. Stephen A. Smith, an ESPN spokesperson asked why they did that to Paul. Meanwhile, Clippers’ management haven’t said anything else as of yet.
