Shooters, NRAI stretched by hectic season

NEW DELHI: It is going to be a busy year for Indian rifle-pistol shooters. The shooters have important tournaments and selection trials scheduled every month, and with Asian Games and World Championships (offering Olympic quotas) will make it even hectic. Sample this: Shooters, who had appeared for selection trials in January, are participating in the Asian Championships in February. They will again have selection trials in March, while April and May will have World Cups in Granada and Munich.

June will again have selection trials, followed by the World Cup in Hangzhou in July and trials in August again. Asian Games are scheduled in Sept, while Cairo World Cup is scheduled in Oct. The World Championships in Nov will offer the first lot of quota places for 2028 Olympics. The calendar will end with national championships in Dec. Arjun Babuta, who finished 4th at Paris Games, said he has planned his year and his breaks.




“I have decided to shut myself completely off from shooting when I will be taking breaks. I will focus on my family business and train only when I am playing,” Babuta said.

Coach Deepali Deshpande said she has already started to make plans individually for the shooters. “I have already spoken to many shooters. They want to plan their year carefully. Neither do they want to play in all the matches, nor would the federation insist on that. But nobody would want to miss a match that would affect their position in the squad,” national rifle coach Deepali told TOI.

The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) has also decided to send alternate teams for the different World Cups in Granada and Munich, scheduled to be held later this year.
