Madan Lal, fondly called 'Maddi Pa' by his former teammates and his juniors, needs little introduction, especially when India's most cherished cricketing moment, the 1983 World Cup triumph, is mentioned.
The former India all-rounder played a key role in India's fairytale run in the English summer of 1983, when the Kapil Dev-led squad, which is revered as 'Kapil's Devils', knocked the mighty West Indies off their perch in the final at Lord's on June 25.
In fact, it was Madan Lal who dismissed the dangerous Vivian Richards in the final off a memorable catch by Kapil, which brought India back into the game after they had scored just 183 and Richards was firing on all cylinders.
The 72-year-old Madan Lal, who was born in Amritsar, played 39 Tests and 67 ODIs for India.
