NEW DELHI: The University of Akron Department of Athletics announced on Thursday the heartbreaking passing of former Zips standout Shawn Barber, a world champion pole vaulter, Olympian, and three-time NCAA champion. Barber, aged 29, passed away at his home in Kingwood, Texas, on Wednesday, succumbing to medical complications. The University stated that Barber had been unwell and facing health challenges for some time.
Describing Barber as more than just an incredible athlete, his agent, Paul Doyle, conveyed the tragic loss of a good-hearted person who always prioritized others. "It’s tragic to lose such a good person at such a young age," said Doyle.
Barber, a dual citizen of the United States and Canada, represented Canada in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, finishing 10th. During his time at Akron, he achieved significant milestones, winning three NCAA Division I pole vault championships from 2013 to 2015.
Dennis Mitchell, the former Akron men's and women's track and field and cross country coach, remembered Barber as "extremely smart" and "the nicest guy ever" in a statement to the Akron Beacon Journal.
In 2014, Barber became the first male individual national champion in Zips history, claiming the NCAA Division I indoor championship. His remarkable journey continued with victories at both the NCAA Division I indoor and outdoor titles in 2015. During the 2015 indoor championships, his final attempt clearance set a then-NCAA championship meet standard.
Barber's achievements extended to the global stage, winning the 2015 IAAF World Championship in Beijing and securing a gold medal at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto. His personal best vault of 19-8¼, set on January 15, 2016, in Reno, Nevada, remains the Canadian record.
