Randhir Singh made honorary member of IOC

NEW DELHI: Former Indian Olympic Association secretary general Randhir Singh has been made the honorary member of the International Olympic Committee at the just-concluded extraordinary session of the world's apex sports body in Monaco.
The 68-year-old Randhir, who served as the secretary general of the IOA from 1987 to 2012, was named for the prestigious honorary membership of the IOC after serving as a full member of the world body from India from 2001 to 2014.
He was made a honorary member during the two-day extraordinary IOC session in Monaco from December 8 to 9.
"Randhir Singh has been made an honorary member of the IOC in Monaco at the IOC session," current IOA secretary general Rajeev Mehta said.
IOA president N Ramachandran attended the IOC session. After Randhir's full membership of the IOC came to an end early this year, the IOA is yet to make a recommendation for a full member of the world body from India.
A former shooter who took part in five Olympics, Randhir is the second Indian to become a honorary member of the IOC after Ashwini Kumar who also was given the prestigious membership after serving as full IOC member from India.
A honorary member of the IOC can attend its sessions without having the right to vote.
Randhir, who was named an IOC honorary member along with four other persons, was also awarded Olympic Orders. His honorary membership begins at the start of next year.
All the five were honoured for untiringly defending and promoting the fundamental values of sport and the Olympic Movement either as an athlete and/or a sports leader during their mandates.
