Mrs Patmore has the last laugh in Classic finish

MUMBAI: Ace trainer Pesi Shroff - schooled filly Mrs Patmore beat Bangalore challenger Hall Of Famer at the wire to claim the Gitanjali Indian 1000 Guineas (Grade 1), the first classic race of the Mumbai season. Rank outsider Mekong Delta finished an eye-catching third. Hot favourite Temerity played up at the gates and almost fell before the start and then failed to produce the performance expected of her.
With all the 16 runners taking a level jump, it was Book Thief who grabbed the lead and showed the way to the rest.Both Mrs Patmore (Trevor Patel) and Hall Of Famer (David Allan), were in the back bunch playing a waiting game.
As the field came to view from the grand stand, it was In My Dream and Cataleya who were disputing the lead with Book Thief running out of gas. Afters both Allan and Patel asked their mounts to go for the kill, both the fillies took charge and started battling neck and neck to grab glory. Meanwhile, long shot Mekong Delta appeared on the scene with a dazzling run but just fell short. At the end, Mrs Patmore managed to keep her head in front ahead of Hall Of Famer to win the race.
“I had no plan for the race but when Hall Of Famer picked up speed from 300 metres onwards, I reminded my filly for the task ahead. Despite being inexperienced, I am glad she managed to produce a breathtaking run to clinch the issue,” jockey Patel later told TOI.
The winner was owned by Vijay B Shirke, Jay V Shirke and K N Dhunjibhoy representing Five Stars Shipping Co Pvt Ltd.
Trainer Jadhav delighted
Trainer Jadhav was all praise for her filly Mekong Delta's fantastic finish. She was easily the fastest in the last part among the first three finishers. “People had forgotten me in the last two years that I am still around. I thought I had to prove a point and I believe I have done that with my filly's performance today,” Jadhav told TOI.
Trainers Shroff and M K Jadhav and jockey A Sandesh shared day's honours among professionals with a double each.
