NEW DELHI: The Indian table tennis duo of Manika Batra and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran faced disappointment in the quarterfinals of the World Mixed Doubles Table Tennis Olympic Qualification tournament in Havirov, Czechia.

The pair, ranked 18th in the world, was stunned by the Malaysian duo of Javen Choong and Karen Lyne, ranked 153rd, losing 4-1 (11-9, 11-9, 11-9, 7-11, 11-8).

This defeat marked their second and final opportunity to secure a quota for the Paris Olympics 2024, following their quarterfinal loss in the first knockout round to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea pair, Ri Jong Sik and Kim Kum Yong.

Despite India already securing quotas for the women's and men's teams, as well as two quotas each in the men's and women's singles events, the mixed doubles quota eluded them in this crucial tournament.

The Czechia event served as the last chance for mixed doubles table tennis qualification for the Paris Olympics.

With quotas also available through rankings, the hope was that Manika Batra and G Sathiyan's 18th world ranking would secure them a spot.

However, the final five mixed doubles quota places, to be determined based on world rankings as of May 7, remained uncertain at the time of this tournament.
