PANAJI: Irvin Soares has been elected as the vice-president of the Volleyball Federation of India, the first time a Goan official has found a place in the VFI executive committee.
The Goa Volleyball Association (GVA) president was elected unopposed during the VFI elections in Chennai on Sunday. Others who filed their nominations as vice-presidents and were consequently elected unopposed include S Kodandaramaiah, Lokesh Gowda, Shekhar Bose, Vijay Dangare and Bhupen Kumar Bohra.
Awadesh Kumar (Delhi) edged out Kuldeep Vats (Uttarakhand) for the president's post, the only post that was contested.

Until his death in April, the VFI top post was occupied by the late Sivanthi Adityan.
Soares has been president of the Goa Volleyball Association for 15 years, and with the VFI elevation has now made it clear that he will not seek another post when elections to the GVA are held later this year.
"This is a victory for Goan volleyball. Off late, we have been doing well and now that I am a member of the executive committee, we will be in a position to do much more. It's not that Goa was not receiving any support from the federation in the past but I will ensure that Goa gets the best treatment," said Soares.
On the local volleyball front, Soares said he will not seek another term in office as president and will instead want "fresh blood" to take charge.
The GVA elections are likely to be held after the Lusofonia Games in November.
