KOLKATA: Indian para archers raised hopes of
Paralympics
medals just months before the mega event, claiming their highest haul in an international meet, winning five medals in the 7th Fazza
Para Archery World Ranking Tournament
that concluded in Dubai on Friday.
India ended third on the medals table with two gold and three silver medals behind Turkey and Russia.
Harvinder Singh and Pooja fetched the first gold for the country in the recurve open mixed team event getting past Turkey's
Merve Nur Eroglu
and Sadik Savas in the final on Thursday. The Indian duo hit 32-33-32 and 30 to pip their rivals who managed 37-30-35-29.
The second gold came in the compound open men's final where Rakesh edged past compatriot Shyam Sundar Swami 143-135. The former took early lead and managed to hold on to it to win with scores of 29-28-30-28-28 to Swami's 26-26-28-28-27.
In the compound women's open gold-medal match, India's Jyoti Baliyan put up a good show before going down to Russia's Stepanida 128-130 to settle for a silver.
Both Baliyan and Swami picked up another silver pairing in the compound open mixed team event. In the final, the Indian duo lost to Russia's
Stepanida Artakhinova
and Nail Gatin 155-158.
Indian para archers had already earned four quota places, two each in recurve and compound sections, for Tokyo Paralympics from the World Para Archery Championships in the Netherlands, while more quotas can be earned in the world ranking event qualifiers in Czech Republic in July.
