NAGPUR: It took seven years for
Dharampeth Krida Mandal
(DKM) girls to break the final jinx and emerge as the District U-13 champion as
Nutan Bharat Yuwak Sangh
(NBYS) boys regained the title with elan in the Nagpur District Sub-Junior
Basketball
Championship, which concluded at the Shivaji Nagar Gymkhana (SNG) courts on Tuesday.
The selection meet to pick the 12-member district U-13 teams for the
Maharashtra State championships was organized by Nagpur District Basketball Association (NDBA).
Both the new district champions played perfectly to the plans of their coaches and surprised the defending champions and hosts SNG in contrasting fashion. While DKM girls defeated SNG 50-44, NBYS thrashed the home team by as many as 33 points (55-22) in a one-sided summit clash.
In an exciting girls’ final, DKM took control of the proceedings with an early 12-point lead and slowed down the pace of the game thereafter to take home the district crown after 2010. After an attacking start by dominating the first quarter 20-8, DKM kept their focus on defence as SNG tried to make a comeback by winning the second and third quarters 10-6 and 16-12 respectively.
With the 12-point first-quarter lead coming down to just four, DKM switched their defensive gears to a balanced offensive play. Their strategy paid dividends as DKM won the exciting final frame 12-10 to emerge victorious by six points.
Emerging point-guard of the city Dhara Phate fired a game-high 23 points for the winners while DKM forward Samiksha Chandak (14) and shooting guard Shreya Gupta (10) played a pivotal role. The DKM trio scored 45 of the 50 points for the winners. For SNG, Shomira Bidaye (21) and Sharvari Nene (10) did well.
In contrast, in the lop-sided boys final, Taran Kakkad (20), Ayush Gorle (11) and Vedant Deshmukh (9) combined well to share 40 points as NBYS outplayed SNG on their home court by as many as 33 points (55-22).
Much like the girls’ final, NBYS boys too played an attacking first period and took a handy 12-point advantage. They stretched the lead further to 16 points by winning the second period 10-6. Despite a handy advantage at the halfway mark, NBYS continued their aggressive play and dominated the third and fourth periods 14-6 and 13-4, respectively, to seal the fate of the hosts 55-22.
With this thumping triumph and after the NDBA failed to conduct the selection tournament last year, NBYS boys regained the district crown after 2016.
