Ethiopians win Manipal Silver Marathon

MANIPAL: Ethiopian runners, Mikiyas Yemta and Zinashwork Yenew Ambi, won the 21.1km men's and women's races in the second Manipal Silver Marathon here on Sunday morning. The two runners here in India for a few months to participate in different marathons was confident of their victories they said as both come prepared to run in some of the races held at this time across the country.
Both bagged a purse of Rs 75,000 each.Mikiyas is three times winner of Bengaluru midnight marathon and has also won 10 kilometre races in a number of other races in India. Zinashwork has also been going around participating in marathons across the country. They will head for Rajkot Marathon to be held next week. Zinashwork has participated in time trial for the Olympics as well.
Manipal Silver Marathon attracted over 7,000 participants of all ages. The response was encouraging and the races which began at about 6 am saw runners arrive at the venue long before the scheduled time. Along with the serious stuff, there was the carnival at KMC Greens organized by Volunteer Service Organization.
The marathon this year was special as Manipal Academy of Higher Education is celebrating its silver jubilee and the Academy of Higher Education its platinum jubilee. The event is sponsored by Adani, Syndicate Bank and Vodafone. The theme for the race this year is "Drug free is the way to be".
