KOLKATA: Hosts Bengal began their campaign in the 23rd East Zone Junior Athletics meet with a bang, winning 14 gold, 14 silver and six bronze to lead the tally after day one.
The Bengal boys and girls in the U-20 sections reigned supreme winning all the medals up for grabs today.
In girls, 3000m Sahanara Khatun emerged fastest with a timing of 10:10.7s while Manisha Mondal (59.1s) took the 400m crown.
They notched their third gold in girls U-20 when Subhra Ghosh hurled the discus to a distance of 33.65m for the top spot followed by state mate Pinki Dey (33.61).
Events are held in four age groups (U-14, 16, 18 and 20) in both boys and girls sections. The day's proceedings saw a total of 28 events.
