MLB trade rumors: Cody Bellinger draws Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees interest while Rockies weigh Brenton Doyle, Mickey Moniak moves

Cody Bellinger is once again the center of MLB offseason talk as the second week of January 2026 begins. League insiders say the Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees are both trying to bring him back. Talks are active, and teams want answers soon as spring training plans take shape across the league.

While Bellinger grabs attention on the East Coast and Midwest, quiet but important talks are also happening in Denver, Colorado. The Colorado Rockies, a team that rarely makes winter headlines, are listening to trade calls involving outfielders Brenton Doyle and Mickey Moniak, according to multiple league sources.

Cody Bellinger draws renewed interest from Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees

Cody Bellinger, 30, became a free agent earlier this month after using an opt-out clause in his contract. He originally signed a three-year, $80 million deal with the Chicago Cubs before the 2025 MLB season.

That contract allowed him to leave after each of the first two seasons. Before Opening Day 2025, the Cubs traded Bellinger to the New York Yankees.

Playing most of the year in New York, he delivered steady defense in the outfield and at first base. His bat also stayed reliable during key stretches of the season.

MLB insider Jon Heyman reported on Tuesday in New York that the Cubs have “checked in” with Bellinger’s representatives.

The Yankees have also made a second offer, showing clear interest in keeping him. “Both sides know him well,” one American League executive said. “There’s comfort, and that matters in free agency.”



Other teams tracking Bellinger include the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, New York Mets, Los Angeles Angels, Toronto Blue Jays, and Philadelphia Phillies. A decision is expected later this month.

In Denver, the Colorado Rockies are taking a different path this winter. As of mid-January, they are one of only two MLB teams without a major league free-agent signing.

New baseball operations leader Paul DePodesta, who took control in November 2025, is open to trading from the outfield to add young pitching. That puts Brenton Doyle and Mickey Moniak in focus.

Doyle struggled at the plate in 2025, hitting .233 with 15 home runs, though his defense remains elite.

Moniak enjoyed his best overall season, batting .270, but his numbers dropped sharply outside Coors Field. “Teams notice the splits,” one National League scout said Wednesday. “That affects talks.” Colorado is listening, but no deal is close.
