Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy and former fiancée Tia Jones were once one of the NFL’s quieter off-field couples. That changed in March 2025, when their relationship ended publicly and violently, followed by arrests, protective orders, and dueling legal claims. What started as a private breakup has since turned into a high-profile legal dispute involving domestic violence allegations, a civil lawsuit seeking up to $1 million, and competing accounts from both sides. Here is what we know, based strictly on court filings, police statements, and on-record reporting.

Tia Jones Is an Elite Track Athlete With a Professional Career of Her Own

Tia Jones is not a public figure because of her relationship with Worthy. She built her name in track and field long before meeting the Chiefs receiver.Jones turned professional out of high school in 2019 and signed with Adidas as a hurdler. She specialized in the 100-meter hurdles and competed internationally. In February 2024, she matched the world indoor record in the 60-meter hurdles, according to NBC Olympics. That performance came shortly before she suffered an ACL tear, which delayed her return to competition until May 2024.
Jones later reached the semifinals of the 2024 U.S. Olympic trials but did not qualify for the Paris Olympics.
She has continued training as a professional athlete since.

How Xavier Worthy and Tia Jones Met and Got Engaged

Jones previously explained that Worthy first reached out to her through Instagram, but she did not respond. Months later, they met by chance at a valet stand in Texas while Jones was training and Worthy was still at the University of Texas. On “The Pregame Podcast,” Jones described the encounter and said Worthy later asked her out. She framed the timing as meaningful, saying, “That’s why God had me late to that dinner ‘cause I met my man.”Worthy proposed in July 2024. The couple shared a video of the beach proposal on Instagram, showing a large rose-shaped heart and the words “MARRY ME.” They captioned the post, “The Worthy’s 💍🌹.”They moved into a home together that same month.

Jones Was a Constant Presence During Worthy’s Rookie NFL Season

Because Jones was rehabbing her ACL injury during the 2024 NFL season, she remained in the United States instead of competing overseas. That allowed her to attend games and stay close to Worthy during his rookie year with Kansas City.Jones said on “The Pregame Podcast” that the injury created “dark times” emotionally but also kept her physically near Worthy. She said, “I’ve been able to be here, you know, taking care of my man...I’ve been able to be more hands-on with him and be with him throughout his rookie season.”She regularly posted from games and publicly supported the Chiefs during their playoff run.

The March 7 Arrest, the Protective Order, and Why No Criminal Charges Were Filed

On March 7, 2025, Worthy was arrested in Texas for alleged assault by impeding breathing or circulation. The charge stemmed from an allegation that he choked Jones during an argument. The Williamson County District Attorney later announced that no criminal charges would be filed after investigators spoke with multiple witnesses. Worthy was released from custody.Despite that decision, Jones was granted a protective order against Worthy on March 12. The order was set to remain in place pending an April 1 hearing, according to reporting from The Athletic.Jones’ attorney, Angelica Cogliano, told the Associated Press, “Ms. Jones has chosen to use her voice to speak up for herself. In doing so, she looks forward to the facts and circumstances of that night coming to light through the formal legal process, and getting the justice that she deserves.”

Why Xavier Worthy Sued Tia Jones and What He Is Claiming in Court

On March 24, Worthy filed a civil lawsuit against Jones in Williamson County, Texas. The lawsuit seeks between $250,000 and $1 million in damages.According to the filing, Worthy alleges that Jones fabricated domestic violence claims in an attempt to extort him. The complaint states that Jones destroyed more than $150,000 in cash and property and physically assaulted Worthy. The lawsuit includes the following claim from Worthy’s filing: “Defendant Jones began physically assaulting Plaintiff by scratching his face and ripping parts of his hair out, causing him pain and injury.”Worthy also alleges that Jones destroyed his game room, damaged a PlayStation 5, took the key to his Rolls-Royce, and removed $30,000 in cash and a handgun from the residence.Worthy’s legal team claims he asked Jones multiple times in February to leave the home after learning of alleged infidelity and offered to help her find an apartment nearby.
