With the 2025 MLB season almost around the corner, there has been a lot of buzz around the signing of many players. The list includes Pete Alonso, who has kept fans hooked with the anticipation regarding his future with the New York Mets. While there have been speculations and reports that Alonso might sign with another team, an MLB insider recently revealed how the Mets haven't given up on him yet.

MLB Insider claims NY Mets still in plans to acquire Pete Alonso

According to a report from the New York Post, Pete Alonso has rejected a contract extension offer from the New York Mets worth $68-$70 Million. Following his rejection, there were speculations that the Mets had given up on Alonso. However, MLB Insider Robert Murray recently contradicted the statement.

According to Murray, the team has been trying to re-sign Pete Alonso, with attempts to adjust their offers according to his demands. Murray recently made a statement in which he reflected back on the Mets' plans to extend Alonso's contract. Talking about the same, he said:

"That belief stemmed from a reported three-year offer in the $68-70 million range, is valid. But the reality is that Alonso's return to the Mets is still on the table. The two sides have talked recently, and it's clear that each side is the best fit for each other."

It's pretty interesting to know that the New York Mets and Pete Alonso are still in discussions about their future together. Alonso's exit from the Mets means Mark Vientos' potential promotion to first base. According to The Post's Joel Sherman, Vientos has what it takes to replace Alonso in the first base.

Nevertheless, if we look at the record of Mark Vientos, he definitely has a pretty solid experience at first base. Vientos' experience includes a total of 14 games in the MLB and 70 minor-league games. Talking about the Mets potential decision to promote Vientos to Pete Alonso's spot, Sherman said:

“He wasn’t very good at first base. But I thought he had a chance to be better there than at third. I haven’t seen him a lot at first base, but Mark puts a lot of work in so I think wherever he is and wherever he ends up, I think he will be just fine."

“Last season helped build confidence with him that, ‘Hey, I am able to do this’ — that was the first time he had ever played third on an everyday basis. It was kind of unchartered water for him from the standpoint of doing it on a daily basis, and he handled it, and I think that is only going to make him better moving forward," Sherman further added.

Mark Vientos' promotion and Pete Alonso's contract extension will remain in the buzz for as long as the first baseman remains active in the open market. Do you think the Mets will re-sign Alonso, or will he end up partying with the team for a better offer?
