SA20 Points System Explained: How teams are ranked and bonus points work for standings

NEW DELHI: SA20, the premier T20 tournament in South Africa, uses a points-based system to rank the teams, ensuring fairness while making the competition exciting. For every match a team wins, they earn four points. In addition, a team can earn an extra bonus point, bringing their total to five, if they achieve a net run rate (NRR) that is 1.25 times higher than their opponents. In the case of a bonus point, a team must finish with a net run rate 1.25 times higher than that of their opponent in that match. This incentivises teams to not just win, but win in a commanding manner. For example, on Wednesday, Sunrisers Eastern Cape secured a bonus point after defeating the Pretoria Capitals by 52 runs.
