Michael Kay supports Aaron Judge after tough WBC final as Yankees captain faces unfair blame and rising pressure
Aaron Judge is facing heavy criticism after Team USA lost the World Baseball Classic final. Many fans quickly blamed the New York Yankees captain for the defeat. But ESPN New York broadcaster Michael Kay has stepped in to defend him. He made it clear that Judge should not be singled out after one bad game. Yes, Judge had a rough night. He went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in the final. But the bigger picture tells a different story. Team USA had one of the strongest lineups in the tournament. They even scored 26 runs against Brazil and Great Britain earlier. Still, the team failed to deliver when it mattered the most.
Speaking on The Michael Kay Show on ESPN New York, Michael Kay said, “We can go up and down that All-Star-laden lineup, and they all struggled. But the one guy who’s going to get criticized is Aaron Judge.” His point was simple, this was a team failure, not just one player’s mistake.
Kay also shared that in close games, when the team is behind by one or two runs, Judge has a .343 batting average and a .582 slugging percentage. These are strong numbers for any player under pressure. He added that Judge’s playoff WRC+ is 125, which is higher than several big names like Ronald Acuna Jr., Alex Bregman, and Mookie Betts.
Even in high-pressure regular season games, Judge stands out. Since 2017, he ranks fifth with a 143 WRC+ in such situations. Kay also mentioned that Judge has the most home runs in postseason elimination games. That again proves he can handle big moments.
However, the criticism did not stop there. Before the WBC final, Judge said the tournament felt “bigger and better than the World Series.” This statement upset many fans. Later, Judge clarified that he values both equally. Still, the comment added more pressure on him.
The truth is simple. Aaron Judge is one of the best players in baseball right now. But he has not yet won a World Series with the Yankees. The team’s last title came in 2009. Because of that, expectations are very high.
Michael Kay has tried to change the narrative with facts. But for many fans, numbers are not enough. They want results in October. Judge may silence the critics during the regular season. But to end this debate, he will need to lead the Yankees to a World Series title.

Michael Kay didn’t just defend Aaron Judge with words, he used strong numbers to support his point. He said, “Since 2017, no one has had more tying or go-ahead home runs in the eighth inning or later than Aaron Judge.” That clearly shows Judge performs well in big moments.Kay also shared that in close games, when the team is behind by one or two runs, Judge has a .343 batting average and a .582 slugging percentage. These are strong numbers for any player under pressure. He added that Judge’s playoff WRC+ is 125, which is higher than several big names like Ronald Acuna Jr., Alex Bregman, and Mookie Betts.
