Hyeseong Kim forces Dodgers to make tough roster decision after surprise breakout

Hyeseong Kim filled in for the Dodgers when they needed him, and now he's demonstrating that he could be ready to do more. His solid defense, energy level, and first-ball hits have impressed the staff. Whether or not he stays or returns to the minors will be based on team needs but one thing is certain: Kim is seizing the opportunity.

Hyeseong Kim wasn't supposed to be in the Los Angeles Dodgers' starting lineup this early in the season. The 26-year-old was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City solely due to a Tommy Edman injury. Now, though, Hyeseong Kim’s strong start has had the team reconsider sending him down. His hustle, defense, and energy have been impossible to overlook.

Hyeseong Kim gives Dodgers unexpected reason to wait

Hyeseong Kim made his first career start on Monday against the Miami Marlins. He had two hits in four plate appearances, also stole a base, and drove in one run. He had strong defense and baserunning the day before against the Atlanta Braves. On Tuesday, he reached base once again and scored, although he got picked off attempting to steal.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Kim "brought a spark" to the team. "It's definitely a thought," he said when asked if Kim could stay longer than his expected time. Kim's speed, glove, and versatility to play several positions shortstop, second base, and center field make him an ideal candidate.

Hyeseong Kim builds strong case to stay in majors

In Triple-A this year, Hyeseong Kim averaged 252 with 5 home runs and 19 RBIs. He was also adjusting to American baseball. While it is great to remain in the majors, sitting on the bench for too long may retard his development. Consistent playing time in the minors may enable him to develop further. But with Teoscar Hernandez injured as well, the Dodgers may need Hyeseong Kim more than ever. His initial success provides him with an actual chance to remain, at least temporarily. Also Read: Roki Sasaki’s Simple One Message Makes Hyeseong Kim’s Debut Unforgettable
