Things got worse when Fernandez spoke about his admiration for Madrid. In a recent interview, he said that if he had to choose a city in Europe to live in, he would prefer Madrid because it reminds him of Buenos Aires. He repeated similar thoughts in another online interaction. These comments were seen as hints toward a possible move, which did not go down well with fans or teammates.

Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel also criticised Fernandez. Speaking on his podcast, Mikel suggested that such comments from a captain figure are unacceptable.
