Maddy Schaffrick burst onto the international scene as a teenager. She joined the USA national snowboard team at 14 and competed at World Cups and the X Games. But by age 20, injuries and mental exhaustion took their toll. Looking back, she has explained that growing up too fast made it hard to balance life and sport. She felt unprepared for adult pressure while still trying to grow as a person. After retiring, she returned to Colorado and lived with her parents. She needed work and chose physical jobs over an office role. She spent a year working in plumbing and heating, an experience that taught her discipline and respect for trade work, even if it was tougher on her body than snowboarding.
Her path back to the mountains came through coaching young kids in Steamboat Springs. She initially volunteered to earn a free season pass, but the experience changed her outlook. Schaffrick later coached teenagers and became an assistant coach with the USA Snowboard Team in 2022. Being back in elite environments stirred regret about unfinished business. She ultimately decided to return, but this time it was not for medals, but for personal healing. She finished third at a 2024 World Cup event in China and landed her first 900 in competition in 2025. While nerves still appear, she now understands how to manage them. She says recognizing negative thought patterns and choosing a different response has been key. This month, Schaffrick is competing in Olympic qualifiers despite recovering from a shoulder dislocation in December. Analysts praise her intelligence and smooth style. Whatever happens next, she is certain of one thing. Snowboarding, not plumbing, is where her future belongs. Also Read: Skeleton racer Kendall Wesenberg bounces back from career-risking spinal injury to chase 2026 Winter Olympic dream
