Who is Katie Uhlaender? USOPC backs skeleton racer with discretionary Olympic spot appeal
The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee has stepped in to support skeleton racer Katie Uhlaender after a controversial Olympic qualifying event. The USOPC has asked for Uhlaender to be given a special discretionary place at the Milan-Cortina Winter Games in February. The move is aimed at protecting what the committee described as her Olympic dream after a disputed race in Lake Placid.
Uhlaender, a two-time world champion, believes she was unfairly denied the chance to qualify for what would have been her sixth Winter Olympics. She claims the qualifying system was manipulated, costing her crucial points.
The controversy centers on a Lake Placid event earlier this month. Uhlaender accused Canada’s skeleton coach, Joe Cecchini, of intentionally withdrawing his female athletes late from the competition. According to her, the timing meant they could not be replaced, reducing the number of competitors and limiting the points available.
In a letter sent to IOC president Kirsty Coventry, the USOPC said these actions bypassed the core principles of Olympic qualification and damaged fair competition. The committee argued that the situation was serious enough to justify changing the qualification outcome. It said the incident caused global reputational harm to the sport and deserved an exceptional response.
The letter also raised concerns that another federation delayed withdrawing four women until replacement was impossible. This, the USOPC argued, directly affected the integrity of the event.
Canada’s skeleton federation defended Cecchini, saying his actions were appropriate, transparent, and focused on athlete welfare. The International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation later ruled that no official rules had been broken and cleared the Canadian team. However, it reminded athletes and coaches about fair play and ethical behavior, and suggested rule changes for the future.
Uhlaender was unhappy with the investigation. She said the IBSF did not conduct a proper review and never asked her to submit evidence. This included a recorded phone call in which she claims Cecchini admitted he was limiting point opportunities to protect his team’s interests.
Despite winning the Lake Placid race on January 11, Uhlaender earned only 90 points instead of the maximum 120 because too few athletes competed. Due to national quotas, she failed to overtake teammate Mystique Ro and missed Olympic qualification by just 18 points.
The USOPC said awarding an extra place would support fair play and the goal of allowing the best athletes to compete. It described the 41-year-old, ranked 19th globally, as one of the world’s top skeleton racers whose presence would strengthen the Olympic field.
