“What if ChatGPT is wrong”- Naomi Osaka irked by use of AI use in tennis scouting after Italian Open win over Eva Lys
Naomi Osaka recently opened up on the growing use of artificial intelligence in tennis. She advanced to the third round of the Italian Open in Rome. The four-time Grand Slam champion defeated Eva Lys in a hard-fought three-set match and later addressed the topic of players using AI tools to study opponents before matches.
During her post-match press conference, Osaka made it clear that she does not rely on tools like ChatGPT to analyze rivals’ strengths and weaknesses. The Japanese star also questioned the accuracy of AI-generated information. Osaka’s comments began discussions around as artificial intelligence continue to grow across the sports world, including in tennis coaching, scouting, and match preparation.
She explained that many people now depend heavily on AI technology. However, she remains skeptical about trusting it completely. Osaka pointed out that inaccurate information could become a problem if players blindly rely on AI-generated scouting reports before important matches.
The 28-year-old also mentioned environmental concerns linked to artificial intelligence systems. Osaka said she had heard that AI tools consume large amounts of water and energy. She said it makes her uncomfortable given the importance of protecting natural resources.
Alongside discussing technology, Osaka reflected on her challenging victory over Eva Lys. The Japanese player won the opening set before losing momentum in the second set. Lys fought back impressively and forced the contest into a deciding third set.
Osaka later regained control and secured a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory after more than two hours on court. Speaking about the match, she admitted her intensity dropped during the second set, but she managed to refocus mentally in the decider.
The former Grand Slam champion also praised Lys for her strong returning game, saying it constantly placed pressure on her throughout the match. Osaka added that it was her first meeting with the German player and she was impressed by her level.
After the match, Osaka revealed that Lys said something positive to her at the net, although she could not fully hear the exact words. The Japanese star smiled and waved in response. Osaka will now face Diana Shnaider in the third round of the Italian Open.
