“She needs to maintain that”: Aryna Sabalenka’s bold Grand Slam boycott comments get unexpected Novak Djokovic's support amid growing French Open controversy
Novak Djokovic has publicly supported Aryna Sabalenka after her recent comments about a possible Grand Slam boycott created heavy debate across the tennis world. The Belarusian star had suggested that players could one day refuse to play Grand Slams if concerns around prize money and player treatment continue being ignored. While many fans and critics pushed back against her comments, Djokovic made it clear that he respected her for speaking openly.
The discussion started after top ATP and WTA players released an official statement earlier this week about the 2026 French Open prize money distribution. According to the statement, players’ share of tournament revenue is expected to drop from 15.5 percent in 2024 to 14.9 percent in 2026. The statement also claimed that issues involving player representation, pensions, and health support were still not properly addressed. Sabalenka later said players could think about stronger action in the future, including a boycott of Grand Slam events.
He said: “The new generations are coming up. I’m glad that there is willingness from the leaders of our sport, like Sabalenka, to really step up and really understand the dynamics of how the tennis politics works and understand the nuances and really what needs to be done not only for her benefit and well-being, but for everyone. That’s a true leadership for me and I think she needs to maintain that. I salute that. That’s all I have to say about that.”
According to reports from the Italian Open media sessions, several top players also agreed with Sabalenka’s position. That list included Jannik Sinner, Coco Gauff, and Elena Rybakina.
Djokovic also explained where he stands in the current discussions. Even though he said he is not directly involved in every meeting, he stressed that he will always support players trying to improve conditions in tennis.
He stated: “I am watching more from the side, to be honest. I haven’t been part of those meetings and conversations. But my position is very clear: I support the players and always will support stronger player position in the ecosystem, as I said.”
Djokovic is now preparing for his return at the Italian Open in Rome, where he is expected to begin his campaign against Dino Prizmic.
