Martina Navratilova under fire after Netflix documentary announcement as Lucy Khadija raises concerns over transgender views

A new Netflix documentary has brought Martina Navratilova back into the spotlight, but not everyone is happy about it. The film, set to release on June 29, 2026, focuses on her famous rivalry with Chris Evert. While many fans see it as a celebration of tennis history, others are questioning why she is being featured so prominently.

After tennis commentator Lucy Khadija expressed her opinions online, the reaction grew more robust. She brought up Navratilova's earlier remarks as a cause for caution, notably her opinions on transgender athletes. Her remarks swiftly drew attention and gave the debate over the film fresh direction.

The upcoming documentary will revisit one of the most iconic rivalries in tennis. Navratilova and Evert played each other 80 times, including 60 finals. Navratilova leads their head-to-head 43–37 and also holds an edge in major matches, winning 14 of their 22 Grand Slam meetings.

Despite these achievements, Khadija expressed surprise at the decision to feature Navratilova in a major project. She wrote, “How Martina Navratilova gets to have a doc on Netflix after years of the most insane tweets is actually crazy lol.” She later added, “Once again they can get away with anything.”

Her reaction comes from Navratilova’s strong and often repeated views on transgender athletes competing in women’s sports. The former World No. 1 has openly said she believes it is unfair to biological female athletes. Over time, her comments have sparked debates across the sports world.

Navratilova has also spoken strongly about political matters in the past, including criticism of Donald Trump. Her outspoken nature has kept her in public discussions even after retirement.

At the same time, the documentary highlights her journey alongside Evert. For years, both players were the best in women's tennis. They were ranked number one in the world. 1 ranking for 592 out of the first 615 weeks of the WTA rankings, therefore highlighting their consistency at the very top.

Winning 15 Grand Slam championships in a row between 1981 and 1985 defined an age. With nine Wimbledon crowns, Navratilova was particularly formidable on grass courts; Evert created her legacy on clay with seven French Open victories.

Titled Chris & Martina: The Final Set, the documentary will feature vintage match footage, personal interviews, and glimpses into their life outside of tennis. Many people are looking forward to it, but the mixed response reveals how Navratilova's past words still influence how people view her now.
