LaLiga striker Rafa Mir faces possible 10-year prison sentence over alleged sexual assault case
Spanish footballer Rafa Mir could face more than a decade in prison after prosecutors demanded a lengthy sentence in an ongoing sexual assault case. The former Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest striker is currently playing for Elche CF on loan from Sevilla FC. Spanish prosecutors have asked the court to impose a prison term of ten and a half years if the 28-year-old is found guilty of the alleged crimes.
The charges relate to an alleged incident that reportedly took place in September 2024 at Mir’s home near Valencia. Authorities launched an investigation after a woman accused the footballer of sexually assaulting her after they met at a nightclub. Following months of investigation, a judge ruled there was enough evidence for the case to move forward to trial, although the player continues to deny any wrongdoing.
According to Spanish prosecutors, Rafa Mir could face nine years in prison if he is convicted of sexual assault. They are also seeking an additional 18-month sentence for an alleged offence of causing injury. The combined punishment requested by prosecutors would total ten and a half years.
The allegations were made by a woman who was 21 at the time. She claimed the incident happened at the footballer’s home in the town of Bétera, near the city of Valencia. Investigators said the alleged assault took place around the swimming pool area and later inside a bathroom.
Prosecutors claim Mir forced the woman into unwanted physical contact and allegedly assaulted her twice without her consent. If convicted, they also want the court to impose a 13-year restraining order preventing him from approaching the alleged victim within 500 metres. They are also seeking compensation of €64,000 ($74,000) for the woman.
Mir’s friend Pablo Jara is also facing charges in connection with a separate alleged assault involving another woman who was reportedly present at the house. Prosecutors have asked for a three-year prison sentence for Jara if he is convicted.
Mir has consistently denied the accusations. After his arrest and later release on bail, the striker released a statement saying he believes the legal process will reveal the truth. He explained that he has trusted the Spanish judicial system from the beginning and has cooperated fully with investigators to help clarify the situation.
The footballer also apologised to his teammates and club for staying out late at a party before the incident took place. However, he insisted he had done nothing illegal.
The case is expected to be heard in a court in Valencia before a panel of three judges rather than a jury. No official date has been announced for the trial yet.
