“It’s a good start”: Phil Mickelson backs Donald Trump slams California fraud compares it to Minnesota scandal and questions Democratic future
Golf legend Phil Mickelson has sparked fresh debate after posting strong comments about fraud in California, his home state. Mickelson said the problems in California are so big that they make the recent Minnesota claims look “amateur.” His posts came after Donald Trump shared similar views online, calling Minnesota a center of fraud while also saying California may be even worse.
The discussion grew after a viral video by YouTuber Nick Shirley, who alleged that several daycare centers in Minneapolis were getting public money without offering real services. Trump reacted on social media, saying, “There is more FRAUD in California than there is in Minnesota, if that is even possible.” He also wrote, “When you add in Election Fraud, then they are tied for first. Two Crooked Governors, two Crooked States!” Mickelson, a known Trump supporter, then joined the public talk, focusing his anger on California’s leadership.
In his first post, Phil Mickelson praised Donald Trump and blamed Gavin Newsom for California’s troubles. He wrote, “Every Californian owes a huge debt of gratitude to President Trump and the entire administration for overriding Gavin’s self destruction and sabotage of our state’s energy infrastructure. Still much more to do in spite of our Governor but it’s a good start.”
Mickelson followed up with a wider political warning. He said, “The dilemma for all Democrats is if you stop the fraud, illegal immigration, and voter fraud in CA, then Republicans win CA and have a huge majority throughout the country. The Democrat party all but ends.”
Later, he asked taxpayers to think about their role, writing, “Legitimate question. We know CA government commits $billions in fraud every year. When we pay our taxes knowing it is directly funding fraudulent entities, does that make us complicit? Don’t pay and go to jail. Pay and you’re funding the biggest government fraud in the country.”
The comments also revived attention on a recent federal case. In December, a federal grand jury indictment accused Dana Williamson, the former chief of staff to Newsom, of campaign fraud. Prosecutors allege Dana Williamson and others moved $225,000 from a dormant campaign account tied to Xavier Becerra and falsely reported over $1.7 million in business expenses. The indictment lists items such as a charter jet, a costly Mexico trip, and a luxury handbag. Newsom’s office placed Williamson on leave in November 2024, and she resigned a month later. All allegations remain claims in court filings.
