Hudson Williams did not expect private messages like these. But after Heated Rivalry became a big hit, the actor says many closeted professional athletes started reaching out to him quietly. During his appearance on Andy Cohen Live on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, Hudson Williams shared that players from different sports have contacted him in private. These athletes are still playing professionally and have not shared their identities publicly. Hudson said the messages came after the show gained strong attention for its honest story and deep emotions.
Heated Rivalry premiered in November on HBO Max. The series follows two professional hockey players who hide their real lives while competing on the ice. The show quickly gained attention for its storytelling and strong connection with viewers. Now, Hudson says the impact goes beyond entertainment. For some athletes, the show feels personal.
Hudson Williams explains how closeted athletes are reaching out after Heated Rivalry success with Connor Stories
Hudson Williams plays Shane Hollander in Heated Rivalry, which is based on the book Game Changers by Rachel Reid. He stars alongside Connor Stories, who plays Ilya Rozanov. On screen, their characters struggle with feelings while hiding their true selves.
Off screen, their bond helped bring the story to life.
Speaking on Andy Cohen Live, Hudson explained how athletes are contacting him quietly.
He said, “It’s definitely the people who reach out somewhat anonymously who are like, ‘I’m still a professional player and I’m still in the closet.’”
Hudson Williams added that the messages are not only from hockey players. Some football and basketball players have also reached out. Many of them choose not to message him directly. Instead, they email Rachel Reid, who then shares those messages with him.
Hudson explained why these messages matter so much to him.
He said, “Sometimes they’re just reaching out privately through Instagram, and those ones are the ones that really hit you. You realize this is a fun show and it’s celebratory, but it’s also touching something very real for people.”
Earlier, in December 2025, Connor Stories spoke with Vanity Fair about his bond with Hudson. He said they connected even before filming began. That comfort helped them tell the story honestly.
Hudson shared at the time, “We got comfortable just being inches from each other’s face and invading each other’s personal space. A nightmare for HR. But it made it easier to go into places where you’re closer than most coworkers ever are.”
For Hudson Williams, the messages from athletes show that the story is doing more than just getting views. It is helping people feel seen, even if they are not ready to speak out loud yet.
