Charles Barkley did not hold back when reflecting on where things stand. “I’ve never understood the whole Tiger situation,” he said during a recent appearance on Waddle and Silvy on ESPN Chicago.
He continued, “I called his agent, I don’t even have Tiger’s number, I said, ‘Let the young guy know I love him, I hope he’s gonna be alright.’ I wish him nothing but the best. Obviously, he has a drug problem, and I got nothing but love for him. He disowned us after one of those car accidents.”
As Barkley sees it, the one-sided feud began around Woods’ 2009 car accident, a moment that pulled the golfer away from more than just the public eye. According to Barkley, the distance grew quickly and without explanation. “Tiger left us,” he added. “I don’t turn on my friends when they do something wrong or make a mistake. But I wish him nothing but the best.”
Despite the frustration, there is no anger in his tone. If anything, Barkley sounds more puzzled than bitter. He has not spoken to Woods in years, yet the concern is there. He still reaches out in his own way, even if the connection has not been returned.

Barkley’s comments also touched on the challenges Woods has faced away from golf. “He’s clearly addicted to pain pills,” Barkley said of Woods. “But I’m gonna give him grace. Anybody who’s had an addict in their family, they should understand. It’s brutal.”
That empathy has been consistent over the years. Even when their friendship appeared to break down, Barkley never distanced himself emotionally. Earlier, he had admitted how difficult it was to watch the situation unfold, especially when Woods made decisions that raised questions within his circle.
Looking back, Barkley still struggles to pinpoint exactly when things changed. At one point, they spoke regularly, shared rounds of golf, and built a connection that crossed sports. Then, suddenly, it stopped.
