Marcus Freeman and his wife Joanna Freeman have walked every step of life together, both on and off the football field. Their story is not loud or flashy. It is steady, real, and built on family.Today, Marcus Freeman is the head football coach at Notre Dame Fighting Irish. But long before the big games and bright lights, his journey started with Joanna by his side. Their relationship began years before coaching titles, media attention, or packed stadiums. From college life to parenthood, and from career moves to public moments, the two have stayed close through it all.Marcus and Joanna met while Marcus was playing football at Ohio State University between 2004 and 2008. According to Yahoo! Sports, they were introduced by Marcus’ close friend, Calvin Pruitt. At the time, both lived in the same apartment complex in Columbus, Ohio. That simple meeting slowly turned into a lifelong bond.From those early days, Joanna became a constant presence in Marcus’ life. Whether it was college football, short NFL stops, or long coaching hours, she stayed beside him. Over time, their family grew, and so did Marcus’ career.

Marcus Freeman and Joanna Freeman welcomed their first child, son Vinny, in 2007. A few years later, in 2010, the couple got married. This came just before Marcus began his coaching career as an assistant at Ohio State.In 2012, they welcomed their first daughter, Siena, while Marcus was coaching at Kent State. Their second son, Gino, was born in 2013 during Marcus’ time at Purdue. In 2015, their son Nico arrived, also while Marcus worked at Purdue before moving to Cincinnati in 2017.Their family continued to grow. Daughter Capri was born in 2017, and their youngest son, Rocco, arrived in 2018. Joanna, who once worked as a news reporter at WBNS-Channel 10 in Columbus, focused on raising their six children as Marcus’ coaching path moved forward.In December 2021, Marcus was named Notre Dame’s head coach. His entire family stood beside him during the announcement. He later shared on Instagram, thanking the community for its support.In 2025, Joanna and all six children celebrated on the field after Notre Dame defeated Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, earning a spot in the College Football Playoff semifinals.In January 2026, Marcus and Joanna were briefly involved in an incident at their son Vinny’s wrestling meet in Indiana. According to a police report, an accusation was made. After reviewing surveillance footage, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office declined to file charges, and both were cleared of wrongdoing.
