Ilia Topuria is already making history in the UFC, and now a respected voice believes he could go even further. On Wednesday, December 24, 2025, UFC Hall of Famer Urijah Faber named Topuria as the fighter most likely to become the promotion’s first-ever triple division champion. Faber shared his views during an interview with The Schmo, speaking from the United States.

Ilia Topuria, known as “El Matador,” has already won titles in two weight classes. While fighters like Khamzat Chimaev and Alex Pereira are also chasing a third belt, Faber feels Topuria’s skills give him a clearer path right now.

Urijah Faber explains why Ilia Topuria stands out in triple title race

During his interview with The Schmo on December 24, Urijah Faber spoke openly about what makes Ilia Topuria different. Faber pointed to Ilia Topuria’s power and balance as key reasons.

“I could say Ilia Topuria,” Faber said. “That guy, his skill set, he seems to have some crazy power that could translate to the higher weight classes.”

Urijah Faber also explained that moving between divisions is never easy. He shared his own experience of competing at different weights during his career.

From speed changes to strength conflicts, he asserts that every time fighters move or withdraw they encounter new obstacles. Still, he believes most people would think Ilia Topuria more capable of resolving those issues.

Faber added that while Alex Pereira has spoken about fighting at heavyweight and Khamzat Chimaev has called out Alex Pereira for his light heavyweight belt, Topuria looks more complete right now.



“It really comes down to technique, will power, and fighting spirit,” Faber said. “Ilia has those.” Even though Ilia Topuria is currently dealing with personal matters and is not booked to fight, his words have still made noise.

Earlier this month, Ilia Topuria spoke to Eldoberdan and turned his focus to Islam Makhachev, who is the current UFC lightweight champion.

Ilia Topuria said he believes that he presents a new kind of test for Islam Makhachev. He claimed his power and ground game could change the fight.

Ilia Topuria also said he would like to submit Islam Makhachev in front of MMA legend Khabib Nurmagomedov, who is closely linked to Islam Makhachev.

A fight between Ilia Topuria and Islam Makhachev would likely take place in the lightweight division and could open the door to Ilia Topuria chasing a third title. UFC officials have not confirmed any matchup yet, but the comments have added fuel to the discussion.
