Robert Lewandowski has left Barcelona after four seasons, and Chicago Fire head coach Gregg Berhalter is not hiding his club's ambitions. The former USMNT boss publicly confirmed that Fire are pursuing the 37-year-old Polish striker, who ended his Blaugrana chapter with 120 goals in 193 appearances and three La Liga titles. Lewandowski departs as a club legend, but his diminished role in 2025-26, just 19 goals and nearly 1,000 fewer La Liga minutes than the previous season, made both parties ready to move on.
Why is Chicago fire going after Robert Lewandowski?
Berhalter did not dance around the subject. "I can speak freely because he is no longer a Barcelona player, and he is someone we want to sign," he said, in statements collected by Polish media outlets and reported by MARCA. Talks reportedly began as far back as December, accelerating once it became apparent Lewandowski had played his last game for Barcelona.
"We have spoken with Robert Lewandowski and with the people who represent him. I am convinced that a player of his level has other offers on the table, but our communication has been frequent and very positive," Berhalter added.
The pull is not hard to understand. Chicago have made just one playoff appearance since 2017, yet sit third in the Eastern Conference at the mid-season break in their 2026 campaign. Adding a striker who scored 27 Pichichi-contending goals just last season, even if age and a heavier workload are no longer feasible, gives the club a finishing presence they have lacked for years. Berhalter called the potential signing "extraordinary" for both the league and the city, noting Chicago's substantial Polish-American community. "We have a top-level offensive team, but bringing in a footballer of his experience, leadership, and goalscoring ability can only make us stronger," he said.
What would Lewandowski's arrival mean for MLS?
Robert Lewandowski himself hinted at the direction he is heading, acknowledging interest in "an option in a lower league." At 37, the physical demands of MLS are a more manageable proposition than another season fighting for minutes in a LaLiga title race. Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick had to carefully manage his workload this past season, and the drop from 27 goals to 14 reflected that load management as much as any decline.
What makes this particularly compelling for MLS is the prospect of Lewandowski sharing the same league, and potentially the same pitch, as Lionel Messi. A Lewandowski versus Messi showdown in MLS would be a story that transcends American soccer. Two of the game's defining players from the last 15 years, still competitive, meeting in an Eastern versus Western Conference clash at Inter Miami or Soldier Field.
Lewandowski's record speaks for itself. Nearly 1,000 career club goals, eight Bundesliga titles, a Champions League, and multiple Golden Boots. His sharpness in the box has not disappeared. What has changed is his tolerance for being a substitute. MLS gives him a stage where he can still be the main event.
