Australian Paralympic long jumper Nicholas Hum dies at 32, leaving athletics community in mourning

The track and field world is grieving the sudden loss of Australian Paralympic athlete Nicholas Hum. He passed away on December 15 at the age of 32. Hum was a Paralympic bronze medallist and one of Australia’s most respected long jumpers. His death came just over a year after he retired from competitive athletics. The news has shocked athletes, officials, and fans across the globe.

Australian Athletics confirmed the heartbreaking update on social media. Tributes quickly poured in from across the sporting community. While Hum’s achievements on the track were remarkable, many remembered him more for his kindness and support of others. The cause of his death has not been made public.

Tributes pour in as fans remember Nicholas Hum’s iconic legacy

Australian Athletics shared an emotional statement following Hum’s passing.

The organization wrote, “Australian Athletics and the entire athletics community are deeply saddened by the passing of Paralympic bronze medallist Nicholas Hum…Nick was one of Australia’s most accomplished long jumpers for well over a decade, but his career was defined by more than just his accolades which include Paralympic bronze.”

Hum enjoyed a long and successful career. He made his international debut at the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships in Christchurch. He went on to compete in three Paralympic Games and five World Para Athletics Championships. His final appearance came at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. He also held the Australian long jump T20 record at 7.39 meters.

Fellow athletes shared their grief online. Rhiannon Clarke, who competed alongside him at the Tokyo and Paris Paralympics, wrote, “Sending my deepest condolences to Nick’s family and all who knew him. We will never forget that amazing smile and laugh..we miss you rest easy Nick.”

Olympian Jacqui Cooper commented, “So incredibly sad! my thoughts are with his family.”

Australian Athletics CEO Simon Hollingsworth also paid his tribute, saying, “Nick was a much-loved member of our community, and his loss is deeply felt…Our hearts are with Nick’s family, friends and teammates as we remember a life that meant so much to so many.”

Family was always central to Hum’s life. During the Tokyo Paralympics, his daughter Holly was born just before his long jump event. After winning bronze, he said, “he competed for Australia and for my newborn daughter.”

Fans continued to post messages like “Rest well” and “RIP… you will always be remembered.”

Beyond athletics, Hum also ran his own business, Peninsula Joinery Specialists. His legacy now lives on through his family and the many lives he touched.
