Anthony Crolla names prospective venues for Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua, says the fight must happen in the UK
Former world champion Anthony Crolla believes a potential fight between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua should take place in the UK. He feels a clash between two of Britain’s greatest heavyweights deserves a home crowd. According to Crolla, such a historic bout should not be moved overseas for financial reasons. He thinks British fans should be at the heart of a fight of this scale.
Crolla named Old Trafford and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as the ideal venues. He admitted Saudi Arabia offers world-class production and huge money. However, he stressed that this particular fight means more to the country. In his view, the legacy and atmosphere of a UK stadium would outweigh any financial incentive elsewhere.
Speaking to The Sun, Anthony Crolla said he would be disappointed if the fight took place in Saudi Arabia. He explained that while he has worked on shows there and seen the high production levels, this bout belongs in Britain. He believes a fight between Fury and Joshua should be staged at an iconic outdoor stadium.
Tyson Fury has already announced he will return from retirement to fight Arslanbek Makhmudov on April 11. The fight is expected to take place in Manchester and will be streamed on Netflix. Makhmudov is an experienced fighter with 21 wins from 23 bouts. He also defeated British heavyweight Dave Allen last year, which has made him familiar to UK fans.
Crolla feels Fury’s comeback opponent makes sense. He believes Fury should win but admitted there are still questions. He noted that Fury’s trilogy with Deontay Wilder and his fights with Oleksandr Usyk took a lot out of him. Still, he said Fury returning from retirement was not a surprise. He added that Fury has retired many times before and is known for changing his mind.
Attention has now turned back to the idea of Fury facing Joshua. Crolla said the demand for that fight will always be there. However, he stressed that Joshua’s personal situation must come first. Joshua recently lost two close friends in a car crash while in Nigeria. Crolla said if Joshua chose to walk away from boxing, nobody could blame him. He added that Joshua has already made a huge impact on British boxing and remains one of its biggest stars.
