NEW DELHI: The rumours of

Sports Authority of India

(SAI) coach

Piyush Kumar Dubey

being part of the coaching set-up of

India's men's hockey team

have turned out to be true. Team sources have confirmed to TimesofIndia.com that Dubey joined the national camp at the SAI Centre in Bengaluru on Monday.

The camp, involving the core group of 34 players, is led by

Hockey India

's (HI) High Performance Director and interim coach David John and the team's analytical coach Chris Ciriello.

"Yes, he is here part of the camp, but it's David and Chris who will be calling all the shots. It could be that Hockey India wants to groom somebody for the future by letting him work under experienced coaches," one of the sources said.

However, there has been no official announcement by HI.

Dubey's name had been doing the rounds as someone reportedly being looked at by HI as an assistant to the new chief coach who is yet to be appointed, after Harendra Singh was removed following the World Cup last year.

HI has extended the deadline for applications for the coach's job from February 15 to February 28.

Dubey, who works with SAI and the Allahabad University, was part of the group of 25 coaches that went to Birmingham in 2016 on an exposure trip, aimed at learning how to combine coaching with sports science.

India are scheduled to kick off the new season at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia from March 23.
