David Coulthard wanted to quit Formula 1 before making Red Bull debut

David Coulthard, one of the oldest drivers for Red Bull Racing, once considered quitting Formula 1 rather than driving for the team’s predecessor, Jaguar. Red Bull purchased the struggling Jaguar Racing in 2004. After being let go from McLaren following a series of underwhelming performances, Coulthard was looking for a seat and eventually found a home at Red Bull Racing, which made its Formula 1 debut in 2005 with him as the team's first lead driver.

Reflecting on his role as Red Bull's first driver, Coulthard shared memories of the team’s 20th anniversary. He told Motorsport, “I decided I would rather quit Formula 1 than sign for Jaguar. Christian [Horner] had just come in, and he didn’t even know which door led to which department at Jaguar!”

“I went to the first test, and I remember the team wanted me to sign straight away, before the test. But I said, ‘No, let me do the test first and learn more about the team,’” he added.


Christian Horner, who became the first team principal of Red Bull Racing, was tasked with fixing many aspects of the team to make it competitive in Formula 1. Coulthard remarked, “Every team has a core group of good people, but you also need strong leadership, investment, and people who can make the whole team believe that this is the right direction. That was what was missing, in my view. So I went to the test and said, ‘If I do well, you’ll want to sign me, and if you do well, I want to join you.’”

How David Coulthard ended up at Red Bull

Coulthard had a significant history in Formula 1, having filled the late Ayrton Senna’s seat at Williams in 1994 after Senna tragically passed away in a race. He moved to McLaren, where he experienced both highs and lows over a period of eight years. Ultimately, Coulthard finished 10th in the championship in 2004, leading to his departure from McLaren. At the time of Red Bull Racing's inception, Coulthard was chosen for his experience on the track.

It turned out to be a great choice for Red Bull, as excitement around the team grew with several headline-making wins. In 2006, after finishing third in a race, Coulthard famously wore a Superman cape on the podium.
