Mohun Bagan Super Giant hit with AFC ban & hefty fine

KOLKATA: Mohun Bagan Super Giant have been slapped with a one-season continental ban and a penalty of over Rs 90 lakh in the light of the team’s decision to withdraw from the AFC Champions League Two.

The Asian Football Confederation’s (AFC) Disciplinary and Ethics Committee is understood to have taken this decision on Wednesday, following the ISL champions’ refusal to travel to Iran for their scheduled group-stage match against Sepahan SC in September.



Mohun Bagan will be disqualified from participating in the next AFC club competition if they make themselves eligible for it, during the period of next two AFC club competition seasons “up to and including” the 2027/28 season.

The city club has also been ordered to pay a fine of $50000 to the AFC as well as a compensation of $50729 “in respect of the damages and losses claimed by the AFC and Foolad Mobarakeh Sepahan FC (IRN).” In all, the penalty is about Rs 91 lakh.
