Liverpool trophy parade chaos: Accused pleads not guilty; Trial to happen later this year

Paul Doyle, the man accused of driving into crowds during Liverpool FC’s title celebrations in May, has pleaded not guilty to 31 charges at a Crown Court hearing. The 53-year-old, appearing via video link from prison, entered pleas on Thursday to multiple counts including 18 of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent, nine of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, two of wounding with intent, one of dangerous driving and one of affray. He appeared composed as the charges were read during the session at Liverpool Crown Court. The case is concerned with the events of May 26, 2025, when Liverpool city centre descended into chaos during the club’s Premier League victory parade. At around 6:03 p.m., a grey Renault Espace was driven into crowds gathered on Water Street, just off Castle Street, minutes after the team’s open-top bus had passed. According to police, Doyle allegedly followed an ambulance which was attempting to reach a possible heart attack victim through a roadblock before entering the packed street. Witnesses reported the vehicle honking before accelerating into fans. The crash left 47 people injured, including four children. Ambulance services confirmed that 27 were taken to hospital, while 20 others were treated at the scene. Two victims remain in serious condition. The ages of those affected ranged from six months to 77 years. Doyle was detained at the scene after civilians intervened and stopped the vehicle. He has remained in custody since his arrest. His trial at Liverpool Crown Court is scheduled to begin on November 25.
