Pele hacked down (1966 World Cup): The Brazilian genius was targeted throughout the 1966 Cup. Things came to a head against Portugal when one defender openly targeted his injured right knee. Another blatant charge resulted in a torn ligament in the same knee. World Cup rules prohibited substitutions in those days. Pele hopped on one leg for the rest of the game. He vowed never to play in the World Cup again. But he changed his mind and won the 1970 Cup. (Getty Images)
